I never had bad skin as a teen! So why do I have bad skin now?
I am so glad you asked!
We sure do hear this a lot in salon and as a fellow sufferer of acne, which didn’t occur until my early 20’s, I was once puzzled by this myself.
I don’t feel oily?
I wash my face?
I don’t use cheap clogging make up?
I get my skin treated professionally?
Why does my skin hate me?
Looking back now it was probably a combination of a lot of things…
So what can cause us to breakout later in life? Lets take a look at some of the possibilities.
Skin barrier function
Commonly overlooked, but if you want a healthy skin-barrier function is and always should be the first step! Without it, your skin simply doesn’t stand a chance. You can achieve this by using products that mimic our skins natural lipid structure. When selecting products ensure ingredients are of a high quality and do not contain the following ingredients.

In my opinion, as a practising Corneotherapist, any of the above could negatively affect the integrity of your skins barrier function and provide no added benefits to your skin.
It is a MUST that you make sure all of your skin care products are at the very least noncomedogenic. Noncomedogenic literally means will not clog your follicles. YES follicles not pores!!!!
All breakouts and congestion are a result of the pilosebaceous unit (hair follicle and sebaceous gland) being blocked and sometimes infected.
Incorrect product usage
Could you simply be using the wrong products for your skin type and or condition? Maybe.

Sebum is the oil our skin naturally secretes, maintaining a healthy oil flow is needed to stop blockages from occurring. This is something that is an inside job, meaning, this comes purely from your diet. Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) - our body can not make these on our own - can be found in foods we eat, but most people will need a little boost from supplements. Omega 3 and omega 6 are needed for a healthy sebum production and cell membrane health. Negative lifestyle factors can block these essential nutrients and impact them being absorbed. This will result is slow moving thick sebum that can obstruct the follicle.
When our skins pH becomes unbalanced bacteria can thrive! We can restore the pH by using specific topical ingredients and rectifying the above.
